MY MOTHER ASKED ME TO GIVE MY FIANCÉ TO MY SISTER — BUT THAT NIGHT SHE LOST FAR MORE THAN MY OBEDIENCE

My name is Mariana, and I spent most of my life knowing that in my mother’s eyes, my older sister Terry would always come first.

When Terry failed, Mom found an excuse.

When I succeeded, I was told I had simply done what was expected of me.

That was why meeting Leo changed everything.

For the first time, someone chose me without comparing me to anyone else.

After four years together, Leo proposed during our trip to Greece. When we returned to Guadalajara, we planned a simple engagement party at our home—warm lights in the garden, good food, music, close friends and family.

I thought even my mother could behave for one evening.

I was wrong.

Halfway through dinner, Mom asked me to come into the kitchen.

Terry was already there.

Her three-year engagement to Ezra had finally collapsed that afternoon.

I felt sorry for her.

Then my mother spoke.

“Mariana, your sister has suffered enough.”

I waited.

“You’ve always been stronger than Terry,” she continued. “You can start over more easily.”

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

Mom took a breath.

“Leo is exactly the kind of man Terry needs.”

For several seconds, I genuinely believed I had misunderstood her.

Then I looked at Terry.

She wasn’t shocked.

She was waiting.

“You want me to give my fiancé to my sister?”

Mom frowned as if I were being unreasonable.

“Don’t make it sound ugly. You’re both still young. Terry needs stability. You’ve always been independent.”

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because sometimes cruelty becomes so absurd that laughter is the only response left.

Then a voice came from behind me.

“It sounds ugly because it is ugly.”

Leo stood in the doorway.

He had heard everything.

My mother went pale.

Terry, however, stepped toward him.

“Leo, maybe you’ve noticed there’s always been something between us—”

“There hasn’t,” he said immediately.

Terry froze.

“I’m marrying Mariana because I love Mariana. You don’t get to transfer people like property because your relationship failed.”

At that moment, my father Arturo walked into the kitchen.

I told him what had happened.

I had rarely seen my father angry, but that night his expression changed completely.

“That’s enough, Clara.”

Mom tried to explain.

He wouldn’t let her.

Then Dad revealed something none of us expected.

The house where we were holding the engagement party belonged entirely to him, and months earlier he had changed his will.

He was leaving it to me.

For years, I had helped with repairs, bills, appointments and everything else my parents needed. Terry usually appeared only when she wanted money.

Mom stared at him.

“You can’t be serious.”

“I’ve never been more serious.”

For once, there was nothing she could say to make me surrender.

That night, she lost more than my obedience.

She lost the power she had spent my entire life using against me.

Three months later, Leo and I got married.

My father walked me down the aisle.

My mother and Terry were not invited.

Someone later asked whether I regretted cutting them out.

I didn’t.

I had spent years giving up pieces of myself to keep my sister happy.

My future was the one thing I finally refused to surrender.
