Nutty the Squirrel woke up one morning, excited to enjoy his favorite candy from the beautiful red heart-shaped box he’d bought yesterday. Standing in his cozy tree hollow, he scratched his head in confusion. Something felt different about the box – it seemed heavier than he remembered.
His friend Berry peeked through the entrance, trying to hide a knowing smile. “Good morning, Nutty! Ready for some sweets?” she called cheerfully. Nutty adjusted his tiny blue bowtie nervously. “Well, I was just about to have some, but…” he trailed off, looking at the box suspiciously.
The morning sunlight streamed through his window, making the red box gleam mysteriously. All around him, acorns were neatly arranged on his wooden shelves, a normal sight in any squirrel’s home. But something about this morning just wasn’t quite right.

“I must have put the candy somewhere else,” Nutty declared, clutching the box. “I’ll retrace my steps from yesterday!” Berry followed along, her pink flower bobbing as she hopped behind him.
They walked down the forest path, autumn leaves crunching under their paws. Nutty stopped at every spot he’d visited yesterday: the old oak tree, the berry bush, and even the small stream where he liked to rest.
“Are you sure you’re not forgetting something?” Berry asked, trying to suppress a giggle. Nutty shook his head firmly. “I remember everything perfectly! I bought this box, came home, and…” He paused, his nose twitching thoughtfully.

Finally, in a sunny clearing, Nutty could contain his curiosity no longer. “I’ll just peek inside,” he announced dramatically. Berry watched, paws pressed against her mouth to hold back laughter.
With a flourish, Nutty opened the red box. His eyes grew wide as saucers. Instead of chocolates, he found perfectly arranged acorns – his own acorns! “But… but… how?” he stammered, looking from the acorns to Berry and back again.
“Think hard,” Berry encouraged, her eyes twinkling. “What exactly did you do last night before bed?” Nutty’s face scrunched up in concentration, then suddenly relaxed into a look of dawning realization.

“Oh!” Nutty exclaimed, starting to laugh. “I remember now! I was so tired last night, I must have put my acorns in the candy box and eaten all the candy while organizing my winter storage!”
Berry joined in his laughter, and they headed back to Nutty’s hollow. “Sometimes,” she said wisely, “we get so busy we don’t even notice what we’re doing!”
Sitting together in the cozy tree hollow, they shared the acorns from the candy box, still giggling about Nutty’s mix-up. “Next time,” Nutty promised, adjusting his bowtie with a grin, “I’ll pay more attention to what I’m doing – especially when it comes to candy!”
“And maybe,” Berry added with a wink, “save some candy for your friends too!” They both laughed, enjoying their acorn feast in the warm midday sun, the red heart-shaped box now holding a sweet memory instead of sweets.
