Tommy stood at the entrance of his garden, his hands on his hips as he looked at the task before him. The morning sun showed just how many weeds had taken over his once-neat flower beds. “Wow, that’s a lot of weeds,” he whispered to himself, adjusting his red baseball cap. The garden tools lay ready beside him – his blue gloves, small trowel, and red watering can waiting to help.
He remembered what his mom had said: “Sometimes the biggest jobs just need a small start.” Tommy took a deep breath, feeling the cool morning air fill his lungs. The birds chirped encouragingly from the nearby trees, and a gentle breeze rustled through the overgrown plants.
Tommy started with one small corner, carefully pulling out the weeds one by one. “These roots go deep!” he said, tugging at a particularly stubborn dandelion. His blue gloves got dirtier and dirtier as he worked, but he didn’t mind. He made a game of it, pretending each weed was a tiny dragon he needed to capture.
“One, two, three…” he counted as he dropped each weed into his green bucket. The pile beside him grew bigger and bigger. A curious butterfly landed on a flower nearby, seeming to watch his progress. “Are you cheering me on?” Tommy smiled at his colorful visitor.
The sun climbed higher in the sky, and Tommy’s forehead was damp with sweat. His red wheelbarrow was almost full of weeds now. “Phew!” he said, taking a break to drink some water. Looking back at where he’d worked, he could already see a big difference. The flowers seemed to stand taller now that they weren’t crowded by weeds.
“Just a little more to go,” he encouraged himself, even though his arms were tired. The sparrows at the birdbath chirped what sounded like approval, making him smile despite his fatigue.
As the afternoon sun cast long shadows across the garden, Tommy stood back to admire his work. The garden looked completely different now – neat, tidy, and weed-free. The flowers seemed to be smiling at him, their colors brighter against the clean soil.
“I did it!” he exclaimed proudly, putting away his tools carefully on the rack. He gave the flowers a gentle watering, watching the droplets sparkle in the golden light. Tommy realized that even though the job had seemed impossible at first, taking it one small step at a time had made it manageable.
That night, as he got ready for bed, Tommy looked out his window at the garden. The moon made the flowers glow softly, and he felt proud knowing that tomorrow, they would wake up happy and free to grow without any weeds in their way. Sometimes the biggest jobs just need a small start – and a big heart willing to do the work.
